Happy 1st Birthday to the Walton Book Social!
Over the last 12 months we’ve been working with Walton Vale Community Shop to bring a free monthly book social to their community hub.
We’ve laughed, cried, loved and hated books, enjoyed treats from Jess Little Cakes, and had brilliant discussions.
Here’s what some of the members had to say!
“I joined the book club as I wanted to meet with other book loving people. I find it so interesting hearing other people's perspective on.what we have read which is often very different to my view. It's also a lovely social event and iv met so many new lovely people which is an added bonus. IV read books that I wouldn't normally have so it takes you out of your comfort zone would fully recommend it!” - Ruth B
“I joined the book club to be able to talk to others about books. I love the discussions we have on each and every book. And I find it interesting to read books that I would never have chosen for myself. I’ve made some fabulous new friends there too.” - Ruth W
“I love the books I have read, the friends I have made, even though I don’t attend every month, I still get the books and read them at home.” - Susan W
“I joined the book club to meet people in our local community who have similar interests to me. I've enjoyed reading books which I usually wouldn't have picked. Most I've enjoyed, some I haven't. I've also enjoyed listening to other people's views of the books that we have read and often find other people may have come to different conclusions to myself. I've also been inspired to read other books from the authors we have read. I would thoughly recommend joining a book club we have lovely social evenings and I have made many friends.” - Ruth H
“I joined because I love reading and coming to book club I've read books that I wouldn't normally read or even look at. I've found new authors that I'd never heard of which makes me want to read their other books. I've loved meeting new people, making new friends and listening to what they've thought of the book.” - Helen L
“I love reading however I never made time for myself to sit down and read. The book club has allowed me to make time and space for this and it’s given me back my joy for reading. I love our discussions! The passion, the laughter, the tears, and best of all, the friendships. I look forward to book club from the moment we choose our next book as I know it’s just going to be a great night in great company with wonderful people.” Ann O
“I had always wanted to be part of a book group, and couldn’t believe it when I learnt that there was one right here on my doorstep. It’s made a huge difference to my life. I absolutely love being in a lovely, welcoming community space sharing books, laughs, opinions (and cake!) with such an amazing group of like-minded, friendly people. Everyone is so open, welcoming and supportive, listening to all the different opinions and perspectives which we feel empowered to share with each other. I love having ‘homework’ too - a different book each month, with some reading choices I would never usually naturally make. It’s great to read so many different genres and to be pushed gently out of your comfort zone. Highlight of my month.” - Heather G
“I love reading but sadly never made time to read. Joining the book club has made me make time to read. I also love our catch ups to talk about the books we’ve read. Everyone is so lovely and friendly in the group.” - Karen D
“I didn’t think it was me at first, but was proved wrong straight away. Really enjoy going and talking/hearing all the different and interesting views on the books we’ve read. Great group of people who I might not have met otherwise. Made me make more time to read. Good discussions with great group of people.” - Julie
We ran, jogged and walked for Creative Spaces Co.
On Saturday 24 May our incredible fundraising team took part in Run for the 97 5K to raise money for our Reading Folk project, a Book Club for mums of children under 2 that meets weekly in Liverpool and Knowsley to chat over a good book and enjoy some grown-up company.
For many new mums, Reading Folk has been vital for their mental health and wellbeing.
Nuala who took part said “Reading Folk has been an intrinsic part of my journey of early motherhood. The regular meet ups with the backdrop of a no pressure chat about a shared book reminded me that despite the raising of a tiny human (and now 3 in my case), you don’t have to feel guilty for taking time for yourself and having adult conversations about the book of choice, current affairs or skincare regimes. Most recently, Rachael’s enthusiasm for running inspired us all and sparked my previous love for the hobby I most enjoyed pre-parenthood. Combining this with my favourite of all time book clubs to help keep it going for future parents felt too important to not take part in. I can’t wait for the next fundraiser!”
If you would like to support our work, please donate to our GoFundMe page, and you can help us bring even more people together to read and connect.
Our next fundraising challenge is the Women’s 5k and 10k in Sefton Park - sign up to the race here and complete the form to be added to our team WhatsApp group.
